Chronic Asthma

Image

Chronic asthma is a long-term respiratory condition characterized by inflammation and narrowing of the airways, making it difficult for air to flow in and out of the lungs. It causes recurring episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing, which can worsen at night or early in the morning. Unlike occasional asthma, chronic asthma persists over time and requires ongoing management to prevent complications.

Dosha Balance

Asthma is primarily seen as an imbalance of the Vata and Kapha doshas, leading to the accumulation of mucus and narrowing of the airways.

Detoxification (Panchakarma)

Therapies are used to eliminate toxins (ama) and excess mucus from the body

  • Vamana: Medicated emesis to clear the upper respiratory tract and stomach of excess Kapha.

  • Virechana: Purgation therapy, particularly for Pitta-related imbalances and to cleanse the gut.

  • Nasya: Administration of medicated oils or powders through the nasal passages to clear sinus congestion and strengthen the respiratory system.

Ayurveda uses various herbs with anti-inflammatory, bronchodilator, and expectorant properties to manage symptoms.

  • Tulsi (Holy Basil)

  • Possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties to reduce respiratory distress and boost immunity.

  • Vasa (Adhatoda vasica):

  • A natural bronchodilator that helps clear mucus from the respiratory tract.

  • Pippali (Long Pepper)

  • Enhances lung function and aids in expelling mucus.

  • Haridra (Turmeric)

  • Contains curcumin, a potent anti-inflammatory compound that reduces bronchial inflammation.

  • Yashtimadhu (Licorice Root)

  • Soothes the respiratory system and acts as a mild expectorant.

Diet plays a crucial role in managing asthma in Ayurveda, focusing on warm, easily digestible foods that do not increase mucus production.

Recommended Foods (Pathya):

  • Warm, light meals (e.g., soups, khichdi).

  • Spices like ginger, turmeric, black pepper, and garlic.

  • Fresh fruits and vegetables with high antioxidant content.

Foods to Avoid (Apathya):

  • Dairy products (milk, cheese, curd) due to their potential to increase Kapha/mucus production.

  • Cold, heavy, and fried foods.

  • Processed and refined sugars.

  • Yoga and Pranayama:

  • Specific postures and breathing exercises (e.g., Anulom Vilom, Kapalbhati) can improve lung capacity and reduce stress, a known trigger.

  • Stress Management:

  • Techniques like meditation are encouraged to manage stress and anxiety that can exacerbate symptoms.

  • Steam Inhalation:

  • Inhaling steam, sometimes with added eucalyptus or tulsi leaves, can help clear congestion. Important Considerations
